Last month, the Dutchman met with United executives and was instantly tipped for the position at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag's interview, on the other hand, alarmed United's board for two reasons.

Due to a lack of charisma, he was stated to have "not blown them away."

Donny van de Beek and Memphis Depay cost the Red Devils a combined £70 million in recent years, but neither player has been able to repeat their form in their country in the Premier League.

Despite this, it is reported that Ten Hag remains the favorite for the position at Old Trafford, but his interview has opened the door for opponents such as Pochettino.

Last summer, Ten Hag met with Tottenham Hotspur, but he was passed over for the post because chairman Daniel Levy felt he lacked a good leadership qualities.

Ten Hag's lack of Premier League experience was the second source of concern.

United are wary of appointing a manager from the Netherlands since they've had bad luck with signings from the country in the past.
