Prior to the game, the hosts were 17th in the league and have now been given a big lift in their fight for survival.

The setback effectively kills United's chances of finishing in the top four, and attention will soon shift to the next permanent manager, whoever that may be.

But, in the meanwhile, the existing team will go through the motions for another month before calling it a season.

Fred, who is staking a claim to being United's most important player, cannot be blamed for any of this. Rangnick, on the other hand, was dealt a bad hand.

However, Rangnick did not say whether Fred will miss a significant portion of the remainder of the season, but muscle concerns are rarely short-term issues. If United had something to play for, Fred's absence would have been devastating, but they don't.

“Fred had some muscular problems on his hip flexor,” Rangnick said after the game according to the official Manchester United website. “We already are without McTominay. Without both defensive midfielders, it isn’t good for us.”
